Is it necessary to know Spanish to participate in COINED Spain’s Teach Abroad Program?

To participate in the Teach Abroad program in Spain, it is an advantage to have some knowledge of Spanish, but it is not essential. To have at least a basic level of Spanish will help you adapt to the new environment, and communicate better with your host family. However, being fully immersed in a Spanish speaking environment, you will soon be able to communicate in Spanish.

What will happen if my host family speaks Catalan at home?

A host family that decides to participate of this program is an open-minded and intercultural oriented family. Even if they speak Catalan at home, they will speak Spanish to you. Eventually, you will also get some words and phrases in Catalan, which will make your experience even richer!

When will I receive information about my host family?

COINED Spain devotes as much time as is needed to the process of selection of a host family to find you the one most compatible with your profile. This process may take a while, but you will have a confirmed family by the time you travel.

Can I choose the social class or religion of my host family?

If you are going to base your exchange experience on the social class, religious, racial, or ideological conditions of your host family, then you did not really understand the spirit of this program and therefore do not have the proper profile to participate in it.

Should I contact my host family before the trip?

It would be advisable that once you receive the corresponding information, you get in contact with your host family so that you begin to get to know each other before your arrival.

Do I need to have teaching experience to participate of the Teach Abroad Program in Spain?

To have some teaching experience will definitely represent an advantage for this experience. However, this is not a requisite. The most important characteristics that are needed to participate in this program is that you are flexible, tolerant, enthusiastic, and that you are determined to make the most of the experience.

How will I prepare my classes for my host family?

Upon arrival, you will participate in a workshop in which you will receive guidance and tips on how to prepare your classes. You should bear in mind that you will need to adapt to the ages and level of each member of the family, so you need to be creative and enthusiastic. These are the most important requirements!
